David was so happy as he left home that morning! His Father had told him to take some clothes and food to his brothers who were fighting in the army of Israel, led by King Saul. His father told him where to look for them, so off he went. David loved to be outdoors. He loved the trees, the sky and... look! Over there! Did you see that rabbit hiding behind the bush? Being outdoors, David just couldn't help praising God.
Later, in the afternoon, he reached the area his father had told him about. Sure enough, there was the army of Israel. He quickly found his brothers and gave them the gift from their father.
While they were visiting, David heard the loudest noise he had ever heard. "What was that?" he asked his brothers.
"Oh, that's Goliath." they answered.
"What is a 'Goliath'?" David asked.
His brothers told him that Goliath was a giant who fought for the army of the Philistines.
Well, David had never seen a giant before, and he wasn't going to miss his chance to see
this one. He left the tent where they were, and quickly ran around the hill to see this
noisy 'Goliath.' And there he was! The biggest person David had ever seen, all 9 1/2 feet
of him. He carried a spear that looked like a tent pole, and a shield that looked to David
as big as a door.
Goliath called the same thing every morning and every night. "Send a man out to fight with me. If he wins, we will be your slaves. But if I win, and I will, you will be our slaves!"
"Why doesn't someone go fight him?" David asked. "Are you all afraid of him?"
"None of us is strong enough to beat him," they replied.
"Well, I'm not afraid of him," David said. "Our God will deliver me."
So David started toward the giant. Goliath saw him coming, and do you know what he did? He laughed! Oh yes, he did! "What am I, some sort of dog that you send this boy out to fight me? Aren't there any men in Israel?"
But that didn't scare David. "Goliath," he yelled, "when a bear attacked my sheep, my God helped me kill him. And when a lion tried to kill one of my sheep, my God helped me kill him. And Goliath, today my God will help me kill you."
Goliath replied, "Well, little boy, I'm not afraid of you, and I'm not afraid of your 'God', whoever He is. So go ahead, make my day."
David never stopped moving. He kept running toward Goliath. He reached into his shepherd's pouch and pulled out one stone from the five stones he had. He put the stone into his sling and started to swing it around his head. Faster and faster it went. Then, at just the right time, David let go and the stone flew up, hit Goliath right in the head, and he came crashing to the ground. David didn't wait for anything. He ran up, grabbed Goliath's sword and cut the giant's head off.
When the rest of the Philistine army saw what had happened, they were plenty scared, because now they didn't have a giant to fight for them. They were so scared that they took off running as fast as they could with the army of Israel right behind them. The army of Israel caught up with them and the entire army of the Philistines was destroyed. And all because one boy was willing to trust his God.
Now, you will never have to face a giant like Goliath, but no matter what problem you are facing, just trust in God. He will deliver you, just like He delivered David.
