MOSES' CALL

The leader of Egypt was very angry with the people of Israel. He commanded that the every boy under the age of two should be killed. But one mother said, "I will not let my baby boy be killed!" To hide him, she made a small basket, coated it with tar to keep water out, and put the basket in the river. The baby's sister kept watching the basket to make sure it was safe.

Who should come down to the river but the daughter of the leader of Egypt! She found the basket and opened it. "A baby!" she cried. "I wonder who he belongs to? I don't have a child of my own, so I'll take him to the palace and he will become my son." She named him Moses; that means "taken out of the water". God was watching over Moses, too, because He arranged to have Moses' own mother move to the palace to take care of him. She fed him, dressed him and taught him about the God of Israel and the customs of his people.

After Moses was grown, he began to see how the people of Egypt mistreated the people of Israel. One time he saw an Egyptian beating an Israelite. He became so angry that he killed the Egyptian. When Moses realized what he had done, he became very afraid. "What will happen to me?" he wondered. He became so afraid that he decided to run away from Egypt. He ended up in the land of Midian, which is a very long way from Egypt. "At least they won't be able to find me here," he told himself.

Moses got a job tending sheep for one of the leaders of Midian. One day while he was out with the sheep, he saw a very strange sight. A bush was on fire, but wasn't burning up! The branches weren't turning black and the leaves weren't falling off like any bush he had seen burn before.

He moved closer to see what was causing it. All at once, the bush talked to him! Oh, yes it did, and it knew his name. "Moses! Moses! Take off your shoes. You are standing on holy ground. I am the God of your fathers. I have heard the cries of my people Israel. You, Moses, will go to Egypt and tell the leader to let my people go!"

Moses thought, "I left Egypt because I was afraid for my life, and God wants me to go back?" Then He started to argue with God. "God, they will want to know who sent me. What shall I tell them."

"I AM THAT I AM! Tell them I AM has sent you."

"But God," Moses argued, "I'm not very good at talking. How can I talk before the leader of Egypt."

"Don't worry Moses. When the time comes, I will tell you what to say."

After all that, Moses finally said to himself, "If God wants me to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, then that is just what I will do. I will trust Him to help me do whatever He wants me to do!"

God will do the same thing for YOU. He will help you do just what He tells you to do. All you need to do is say, "Yes, Lord."
