A WEDDING AT CANA

Matthew didn't want to go. He had better things to do than go to a stupid wedding. But there was no way he could stay home by himself, so he would just have to make the best of it. In the first place, it was a long walk from Jerusalem, where they lived, to Cana where the wedding would be. He did enjoy being outside, though, so even that might not be so bad. He would also get to see family and friends that he hadn't seen for a long time, even though he would have to wear his good clothes.

The trip went faster than he thought it would and they were at Cana before he knew it. The next day was the wedding, so he got up and put on almost clean clothes, ran his hand over his hair so his mother would think he had combed it, and he was ready.

The weddings they had then were different from ours. They had a big feast, with all kinds of good food. Matthew did enjoy that part of it. What little boy doesn't like to eat?

During the feast, Matthew was watching the servants. They seemed worried about something. They gathered in a corner and were talking to each other very quietly.

One of the lady guests asked them, "Is something wrong?"

"Yes," they confessed. "We've run out of wine. The master of the feast will be very unhappy, and the bride and groom will be very embarrassed."

A sly grin spread over Matthew's face. "A wedding without wine to drink? This might be fun to watch. The adults aren't going to like that at all."

The lady said something to a man sitting with her, then spoke to the servants. "Do whatever he tells you."

The man, whose name was Jesus, told the servants, "Fill all the big water pots with water." It took them a long time because the pots were so big. When they had finished, he said, "Now take some out and take it to the leader of the feast."

"Take some to the leader," Matthew thought. "He's going try to fool them into thinking that is wine and, not water? Ooh, this should be good."

The servants did as Jesus had told them. When the leader of the feast tasted the wine that Jesus had made, he turned to the groom (that's the man getting married) and said, "Usually the best wine is served first, and the cheaper wine is served later, but you have saved the best wine 'til now."

"It is wine," Matthew said, almost outloud. "Jesus turned the water into wine, just so his friends wouldn't be embarrassed."

Jesus cares soooo much about you. He cares about the little things and the BIG things. Isn't Jesus wonderful?
