Feeding 5000
Little Matthew was very excited when he got up. Today was the day he got to go hear Jesus teach. He had heard Jesus teach and always enjoyed hearing about Heaven, and seeing all the wonderful things Jesus did. Matthew didn't waste any time getting dressed. As he ran through the kitchen, he grabbed the lunch his mother had fixed for him. Five small loaves of bread and two fish. Not much, but plenty for a small boy.
He didn't have any trouble finding where Jesus was. There was always a crowd of people around Jesus. Matthew worked his way through the crowd to get as close to Jesus as he could. He wanted to hear everything Jesus said. Matthew enjoyed listening so much that he even forgot to eat his lunch.
Late in the afternoon, some of Jesus' special followers said, "The people must be getting hungry. Why don't you send them away to get something to eat."
Jesus said "Why don't you feed them?'
"Master," they replied, "how can we feed a crowd this large? It would take more money than we have to buy enough food for each of them to have even a little. There are over 5,000 men here, plus the women and children."
"How much food do you have?" Jesus asked.
"Well, there is a boy here with a little bread and a few fish, but what good is that with a crowd this big?" They were looking right at Matthew when they said that.
"Bring the lunch to me," Jesus said. " Jesus wants my lunch?" Matthew thought. "Well, yes, of course Jesus can have my lunch. Jesus can have anything of mine he wants."
The followers brought the lunch to Jesus. He thanked God for it and blessed it, then said, "Now, feed the people."
"Feed the people?" they thought. "With this little lunch?" But Jesus had told them what to do, so they started giving the food to the people. They reached into the basket and pulled out bread and fish, and more bread and fish, and more bread and fish... until everyone had eaten all they wanted. Then Jesus said, "Take up the leftovers. We don't want anything to be wasted." And they picked up 12 baskets of pieces left over! There was more after they had all eaten than there was to begin, and all because one little boy was willing to give what he had.
What you have may not seem like much to you, but if you will bring it to Jesus, He will thank God for it and bless it, and it will become more than enough.
