God's people wanted a king, just like the other people around them. God was not pleased with this, but honored their wish. God had Samuel annoint Saul to be the first king of Israel. Saul was from the tribe of Benjamin, the son of Kish. He was very tall and made his home in Gibeah. He had several sons, but his best known son was named Jonathan, who became the best friend of David. Saul spent much of time fighting enemies, especially the Philistines. But Saul turned away from God. He offered a sacrifice by himself instead of waiting for Samuel to do it. Later, he did not completely destroy the Amelekites as God commanded. So God decided that David would be the next king. You can read the whole story in the book of 1 Samuel.
